タベブイアはノーゼンカズラ科の顕花植物の中の一つの属です。
１９９２年にタベブイア属の分類の改訂で、９９種と１種のハイブリッドが記述されました。その後のDNA配列の系統面における研究で定義されたタベブイアには多くの系統がありました。２００７年に、それは三種類に分割されました。プリマベイラ（Roseodendron donell-smith)、および関連した独自の共通名を持たない種類（Roseodendron chryseum)はロゼオデンドロン(Roseodendron)に移されました。イペー（ipe)、紫イペー（pau d'arco）又はポウイ（poui)として知られているものはハンドロアンサス（Handroanthus）に移されました。67種がタベブイアに残りました。１９９２年にGentryが記述したタベブイアの、旧来の種類と９９種の多系統グループは、現在、通常は「広義のタベブイア」と見なされています。
「タベブイア」はブラジル東北部の先住民族であるツピー族のツピー語の「tacyba bebuya」の略語でからきており「アリの木」という意味です。

In 1992, a revision of Tabebuia described 99 species and one hybrid. Phylogenetic studies of DNA sequences later showed that Tabebuia, as then circumscribed, was polyphyletic.[3] In 2007, it was divided into three separate genera. Primavera (Roseodendron donnell-smithii) and a related species with no unique common name (Roseodendron chryseum) were transferred to Roseodendron. Those species known as ipê, pau d'arco, or poui were transferred to Handroanthus. Sixty-seven species remained in Tabebuia. The former genus and polyphyletic group of 99 species described by Gentry in 1992 is now usually referred to as "Tabebuia sensu lato".
The generic name is derived from words used for these trees by the Indigenous peoples in Brazil.

The name Tabebuia entered the botanical literature in 1803, when António Bernardino Gomes used it as a common name for Tabebuia uliginosa, now a synonym for Tabebuia cassinoides, which he described as a species of Bignonia. Tabebuia is an abbreviation of "tacyba bebuya", a Tupi name meaning "ant wood". Among the Indigenous peoples in Brazil, similar names exist for various species of Tabebuia.

"Ipê" や "ipé"は、16世紀にブラジルの海岸に生活していた、ツピ族の人々によって話されていた言語の ï'pé という言葉に由来するようです。「厚い皮の木」という意味です。ツピ族の「ウヴァ茶」はこの樹皮のようです。
"Ipê" e "ipé" provém do tupi ï'pé, "árvore cascuda"2 . "Pau-d'arco" é uma referência a seu uso, pelos povos indígenas do Brasil, como matéria-prima para confecção de arcos3 . "Ipeúva" significa, traduzido do tupi, "árvore da casca"4 .

サンパウロ市在住の松村滋樹さんから、「Cidades brasileiras cujos nomes têm origem no tupi-guarani e outros nomes」という資料を紹介して頂きました。先住民のトゥピ・ガラニー族の言語に由来するブラジルの都市名の解説書です。これに、サンパウロ州の「IPEÚNA市（人口現在6千人）」があります。
IPEÚNA (SP) y’pê: madeira de casca dura - ipê + una: escuro, preto. Ipê-roxo = y’pi’una: madeira de casca preta.
IPEÚNAとは、黒いイペー、すなわち紫イペー、イペー・ロッショという意味です。
